Two brilliant young Caltech
physicists in their mid-twenties, with “a
combined IQ of 360” - Leonard Hofstadter, (IQ173) a cello playing theoretical physicist, and Sheldon Cooper (IQ187) a tall, Spock/Data/C3P0 like genius since childhood, from East Texas , are the kind of "beautiful minds" that understand how the universe works. Their PhDs, however, don't help them interact with people, especially women. All this begins to change when a 22 year old free-spirited, blue eyed, blond beauty from Omaha, newly single Penny, a waitress from the Cheesecake Factory, with show-biz aspirations, moves in next door. When Leonard and Sheldon meet Penny, Leonard is immediately interested in her. Sheldon is quite content to spend his nights playing Klingon Boggle with their socially dysfunctional fellow geeky Tech geniuses, Howard Wolowitz a 27 year old Jewish engineering Masters at Caltech's Department of Applied Physics, a wannabe lady’s man who lives with his mother, and Rajesh “Raj” Koothrappali a 26 year old particle astrophysists, who is so shy he can’t speak to women. Their geekiness and intellect are contrasted by Penny’s social skills and common sense. John Cleese says, “This is the first funny American sitcom!” Rowan Atkinson says, it’s currently his “favourite comedy, period!” Steven Hawking does watch and enjoy the Big Bang Theory.
